Even though there are many species of garter snakes, most share very similar characteristics. They typically are dark black, olive, or blue with three light stripes running down their body. Technically garter snakes produce small amounts of venom, which they use to stun the small prey they feed on. They do have small fangs that can leave a mark, but nothing serious.
