Stinging Insects Pack a Powerful Punch

Hughes Exterminators offers tips for homeowners to avoid stinging insects and their painful stings this summer

Have you ever been at a summer barbeque felt as though an angry wasp was only coming after you? That feeling is common. Wasps are known to have an extremely aggressive nature and will sting for no apparent reason. Oftentimes wasps do not need to be provoked to show their stinging aggression.

While wasps are the most aggressive of the stinging insects, they are not the only ones that can leave you in pain. Yellow jackets, bees, mosquitoes, ticks and fire ants can also ruin summer fun. In addition to painful stings and bites, they can pose a serious health hazard. More than 500,000 people are sent to the hospital each year because of stinging insects and severe allergic reactions, and mosquitoes have the potential to carry West Nile Virus and other diseases.

“Wasps and other stinging insects can be extremely dangerous and it is critical to understand the risks associated with leaving an infestation untreated,” said Shay Runion, Hughes pest expert. “By working with a pest professional to inspect your home and yard for potential problems, you can safeguard your family and enjoy your home to the fullest throughout the summer months.”

Hughes Exterminators offers these tips for preventing stinging insects from taking a bite out of your summer:

  • Hire a trained professional to destroy or remove dangerous hives and nests around the home.
  • Cut back or get rid of unnecessary vegetation around your home where pests can breed or nest.
  • Keep windows and doors properly screened and trashcans covered and sealed.
  • As wasps are attracted to sweets, do not leave drinks or food in accessible areas.
  • If approached by a stinging insect, remain calm and quiet. Avoid swaying or swinging, as this may provoke an attack.
  • When outdoors, wear shoes, especially in grassy areas.
  • When dining outside, keep food covered until ready to eat.
  • Avoid wearing sweet-smelling perfumes or colognes when spending time outside.

Hughes protects homes from stinging insects with the STEPS™ Total Protection System, an industry-leading process that utilizes Integrated Pest Management. STEPS includes full inspection of home and property to pinpoint pest control issues; identification of not only the pest, but the true cause of the problem; and treatment in the most environmentally responsible way to alleviate current issues and help prevent any future recurrence.
